[admin post] Admin Post: Tag, you're it.

You can now tag your own posts!

Choose from our existing tags and categorize your post by content (recipe, product review, request, etc), and then, if relevant, a specific diet (paleo, keto, vegan, SCD, et al), what else it's free from (those tags start with a bang so they're always up front, e.g. !: egg-free), flavor (sweet or savory), meal (side, snack, soup...), and mode of preparation (task: cooking and task: baking).

To keep things consistent, you won't be able to create your own tags, so you'll need to precisely match the tags we have when entering them into the tag field. The easiest way to do this is to use the beta "create new entries page" which offers tags by way of autocomplete. If you can't tag your posts—for any reason—that's totally fine. Mods will be adding or subtracting tags as needed, and tagging posts without them.

Questions? Come ask them in the comments or send me a DM.

Prompt: Soup

Our prompt for April is soup!

To fill this prompt, you can:

  1. Slide into the comments of this post and share a link to a recipe, product, or resource and why you like it.
  2. Write up a favorite recipe and post it to the comm.
  3. Post a review of a related product or cookbook to the comm.
  4. Try someone's recipe and reply to their post (or comment) with any changes you made and how it turned out.
Monthly prompts are only for inspiration and not a requirement. You can post whatever you like to the comm whenever you like as long as it meets the community guidelines.

Here's what's going on in the comments:

And a bit of admin: I'm in the process of changing the prompt tag from "content: prompt" to "admin: prompt" and so this post has both on it just in case any of you are tracking the original tag. I'll merge the two in the coming weeks and all future prompt posts will be tagged with "admin: prompt."

Thank you!

Thank you to the anonymous benefactor who bought [community profile] gluten_free paid time and ensured we can search the entirety of the comm, including the comments! Not only does this gift support our community, it also supports Dreamwidth.

So, while I'm here, a public service announcement. If you don't follow [site community profile] dw_news, here are two news you might like to know:

  1. Dreamwidth is having its annual Holiday Points Bonus promotion. For the entire month of December, all orders made in the Shop of points and paid time, either for you or as a gift for a friend, will have 10% of your completed cart total sent to you in points when you finish the transaction.

  2. Prices for paid accounts and premium paid accounts will increase in 2025 to more closely match the inflation-adjusted original launch prices.

Happy Holidays to us!

Thank you to the anonymous benefactor who bought [community profile] gluten_free paid time!

One of the great things about being a paid community is being able to search the comm's entries and comments. So if you're on the hunt for recipes (or user substitutions) with, say, buckwheat, you can use the search box on our front page—or the content search page if you're on mobile—type in your query, tick the little box to include comments, hit search, and, in this example, get 42 hits for buckwheat.

Admin: Gluten Free, now Mobile Friendlier

Hey everybody, just letting you know I made some adjustments to the comm's theme in an attempt to make it more mobile friendly. I'm not saying I entirely succeeded, but the largest problems are now missing from my tiny screen. If you have a different experience, please let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Giving Thanks

Some kind soul has renewed our paid account here at [community profile] gluten_free for another year. Thank you so much for supporting our community!

This gift is perfectly timed, as it's Thanksgiving here in the States, a day we take stock of the things we have to be grateful for and celebrate our friends, family, and community.

If you'd like to discuss your menu for a gluten-free Thanksgiving—of any stripe, American, Canadian, official or not—hop in the comments and let us know what you've got planned or how it went.

Admin: Update to Community Guidelines

Hello everyone, with the latest everything going on in the world, I noticed our community guidelines didn't address harassment, so [personal profile] jesse_the_k and I put our heads together and added a Conduct section.

Just to be clear, I'm not aware of any instances of harassment on the comm, so this isn't a result of anyone's bad behavior. I'm happy that our community is a supportive and encouraging place, and these guidelines will help ensure that continues.

Here's the new section in its entirety:

Conduct

Anyone using [community profile] gluten_free as a platform for harassment or abuse will be banned from the community and, if appropriate, reported to Dreamwidth for violating the Terms of Service.

Harassment is unwanted attention. Repeatedly engaging someone who has said "stop" is harassment. Behavior that reinforces structures of oppression is harassment and can target:

  • gender: including gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation
  • bodies: disability, physical appearance, body size, diet, age
  • race/ethnicity/geographic origin
  • class
  • religion

If you have a conflict with another community member and can't resolve it or don't feel comfortable doing so yourself, contact the mods for help.

Announcement: gluten-free is now a paid comm!

Thanks to an anonymous benefactor, the comm has been given a year of paid time! [personal profile] jesse_the_k and I are delighted. Thank you so much!

This means you can search the entire comm, including comments! And also we can do polls. I'm trying to think of a way to put them to good use. Ideas?

Edit: Also! I turned on the "active entries" module, which you will now find on the comm's sidebar directly under the links. It's a good way to check in on older entries that have recent comments.

Admin: Change to Prompt Schedule

Greetings, all. We're going to mix things up a little and switch to a monthly recipe prompt with discussion prompts being more of a bi-monthly thing. And if you want to know if that means twice a month or every other month, then, yes. Something like that. :D

Partly this is because I've picked up another responsibility, but mostly it's because I'm running out of discussion prompts.

To that end, if you've got a topic—or a recipe prompt—you'd like to see discussed on the comm, drop me a note here in the comments—or send me a DM—and share your idea. I might not use all of them, or I may reword the ones I do use, as I try to make the prompts as inclusive as possible.

And let's just go ahead and extend the Summer/Winter recipe prompt for the rest of July. Were you working on a great recipe for potato salad or hot cocoa but didn't pull it together in time? Now's your chance!

Community Guidelines Updated

Hello, team! As you know, this comm is not just for sharing recipes. We said as much in the community guidelines, and then promptly failed to elaborate. So here's that, belatedly. This has been added to the guidelines right after How to Post Recipes, and here it is now for your convenience.

How to Post Everything Else

Requests can be an appeal for a certain kind of recipe, help with adapting a recipe to make it gluten free, or advice on where you went wrong with your dang popovers.

Resources are things you think your fellow community members would find informative. Go for the specific rather than the general. So not an entire blog, but a chart of starches and their properties. Not an entire television series, but that one episode of Martha Bakes where she does gluten-free desserts.

Book reviews and product reviews go into some detail and include your personal opinion. Try to hit all the highlights: "Here is a thing; here's what it does, and here's what I think about it."

Tips & Tricks are based on your personal experience. It could be a brief guide to the differences between nut flours, or it could be an essay about gums and gum-substitutes and the different ways you like to use them.

Include these categories in your subject line, like "Request: need a soy-free vegan lasagna recipe!"

Questions? Ask 'em!

Community Guidelines Revised

What a busy first few days we've had! The response has been better than I could have hoped, and I'm thrilled with all the recipes that have already been shared. You folks are doing awesome work.

Now, any time you're planning anything, whether it's a vacation or a war or a comm, you can only plan so much, and when you get there you realize you forgot your toothbrush. With that in mind, we've revised our Community Guidelines slightly to add some stuff we just hadn't considered or accidentally left out.

Here are the highlights:

  • one recipe per post
  • pictures go under cut tags; keep them under 500 px
  • don't override the default settings to change the color or font of your posts

Questions? Ask 'em!

community promo

A wooden cutting board with a chef's knife and some greens on it, text: New! Gluten-Free, a comm for sharing gluten-free recipes and resources.

The comm had a great first day, and it's been wonderful meeting you all! I'm still working my way through the introduction post, but in the meantime, here's a banner you can use if you want to promote the comm. I made some nice code for you in a box.

Prompt: Introductions

Hello, gluten-free friends and family! It is I, Punk, speaking to you with my words. If you haven't already, please read the community guidelines for your safety and mine.

If I can keep my act together, I'll be posting a weekly discussion topic to prompt conversation about gluten-free cooking. This week I thought we could introduce ourselves and do some light mingling.

Let's do name, rank, and preferred pronouns. And maybe answer one or more of the following questions:

  • What's the last gluten-free thing you made with your own hands?
  • If your answer is "coffee," that's valid.
  • What kind of foods do you like to prepare?
  • How much baking experience do you have?
  • What type of recipes are you interested in?
  • Are you here to post, comment, or just be a friendly lurker?
  • If you are going to lurk friendily, please say hi just this once. We'll say hi back.

Also, as the comm opened on Pi day (3.14), why not tell us your favorite pie?

Come join me in the comments!
